24 Hours: Visit to the Stratusphere

When you ask people about how they got interested in yoga, the answer doesn't usually involve getting squashed by a 600-pound pro wrestler named Viscera.

But former WWE women's champion Trish Stratus is not like most people, so one should expect a peculiar anecdote. Stratus relates the story while lounging at the new Stratusphere yoga studio she co-owns in Vaughan, talking about how working her way back from injuries got her interested in the practice.

"My return was being delayed more and more," Stratus recalled, although in fairness, the storyline coincided with a herniated disc that needed attention for some time. "I think it's important that people come in and find the right fit (for their health and abilities)."

Getting powerbombed through tables on a semi-regular basis can lead to a variety of bumps and bruises and Stratus has more or less hung up the boots for the time being. Over the last few years she has pursued other interests including involvement with the Second City comedy troupe and various television projects. She co-owns the Stratusphere with high school friend Janette Lynn.

While a busy appearance and television schedule makes it unlikely Stratus would ever be teaching a regular class, she didn't rule out visiting and taking-part in the odd session.

"I've hired the best instructors in Toronto," Stratus boasted, "but maybe I'll do a Stratus-faction class (from time to time)."

Stratusphere Yoga officially opens this weekend and is located at 255 Bass Pro Mills Drive in Vaughan. For more information, phone 905-760-YOGA or visit stratusphereyoga.com.
