Trish Stratus vs. Becky Lynch comes full circle in Pittsburgh
Trish Stratus is set to battle Becky Lynch at WWE Payback. But the match's backdrop is a full-circle moment for both women.
In 2018, WWE's original bad girl returned to much fanfare. She quickly proved that she still had what it takes to compete at the highest level, and the WWE Universe was thrilled to see her back in action. Meanwhile, Becky Lynch was continuing her own meteoric rise to the top of the WWE. She had become the most dominant female in recent memory, and her star was only continuing to rise.
These two female powerhouses' paths crossed for the first time in 2019 during an episode of Raw where Stratus teamed with Natalya to take on Lynch and Charlotte Flair.
On that night, Stratus came to the aid of Lynch, stopping an attack from Natalya. Location? Pittsburgh.
Their paths didn't cross again until 2022 at a Live Event tour in Canada. The WWE Universe got a small taste of what was a dream match for many. However, no one could have foreseen that it would become a reality after Stratus' farewell match against Charlotte Flair three years prior.
Fast forward one year later, Stratus surprised everyone by returning to the WWE to help her bestie Lita and Lynch win tag team gold from Damage CTRL.
They remained aligned, even sharing The Grandest Stage of Them All at WrestleMania 39. However, over time dissension developed and ultimately, Stratus turned her back on her former friends and attacked both Lita and Lynch. This was the spark that heated this rivalry with "The Man". And here we are six months later in what could be the final time Stratus and Lynch face-off inside of the squared circle.
Arguably the greatest of their respective eras, this is a generational face-off, a clash of two of the biggest stars of women's wrestling. This match represents two eras of women's wrestling coming together. Trish Stratus represents the old guard, the women who fought hard to pave the way for the current generation of wrestlers. Becky Lynch represents the new guard, the women who are taking women's wrestling to new heights.
On Saturday, we will find out who is the greatest of this era and it all culminates inside a Steel Cage at WWE Payback where their history began – in Pittsburgh.
