Metro Toronto: Trish Stratus, Champion of Canuck Style

If you think Trish Stratus, the reigning World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Women’s Champion, is an unlikely candidate for couture, you’re right — but then, Stratus aims to play with a lot of your preconceptions about her when she hosts the Canada’s Walk of Fame shindig this weekend.

For one, she’ll be doing — no joke — a song-and-dance number.

Misura designer Joeffer Caoc poses with a dress he designed for Trish Stratus’ appearance hosting the Canadian Walk of Fame this weekend.

For another, she’ll be promoting Canadian fashion by appearing in a series of gowns by designers including Joeffer Caoc, the creative force behind the Misura label, and bridal designer Renella di Fina.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say I follow the trends or anything, but I love fashion, I love beautiful clothes,” Stratus told Metro. She explained that she had met Joeffer Caoc at Toronto’s Fashion Week, and that she “was down in New York on Fifth Avenue and I saw this dress that was gorgeous, and I inquired who the designer was and her name is Renella Di Fina and she’s right here in Toronto. So I went down to her and she was totally excited to do it.” The di Fina gowns will include an ocean blue taffeta number and a copper silk satin gown.

Designer Renella di Fina is also creating gowns for Stratus.

“I just wanted it to be very, very glamourous and take the chance to show a different side … because I think when a lot of people heard originally that I was hosting they were like ‘Oh you mean the wrestler? That’s strange.’ But maybe they don’t know what I can bring to the table.”

Catch the proceedings Sunday with a preview at 6:30 p.m. on eTalk Daily, and 7 p.m. on CTV.
